2007-8 INDOOR EFFORTS

Elthorne CC vs Catch 22 - Lord's Indoor School
17/1/08: ECC won by 60 runs
Elthorne 196
Catch 22: 136

Elthorne started 2008 with a comfortable 60 run win over friendly indoor rivals Catch 22 but it was Ian Freeland who ended up with a bloody nose after failing to take evasive action quicky enough from a straight drive from team mate Lee Bailey. The Zim all rounder was at the non striker's end when he was struck by a rising straight drive which probably cost Elthorne six runs but first thoughts turned to the dry cleaning bill.

Elthorne started shakily as opening pair Mark and Amish traded in both runs and wickets early on before settling down to post a useful forty odd. Next pair Richard and Peter took the score to just under eighty before Lee and Ian hit out - literally in Lee's case. With Ian retiring injured at the start of the last over, Nick took advantage of an over's extra batting practice as both he and Paul raced ahead to leave Catch 22 wanting nearly 200 to win in 20 overs.

At the half way stage it looked like game on as Catch were only just behind the run rate but in his first game indoors Lee Bailey was the pick of the bowlers with five wickets only ruining his chance of a hat trick with a wide as Elthorne ran out easy winners.

Later in the Warwick Arms, Elthorne did the double over Catch securing third place in the quiz and a princely £4 by winning the tie break question. Like most of the Catch 22 batting, the less said the better.

28/2/08: ECC won by lots of wickets (apologies for lack of stats)

Though the Elthorne team (Gordon, Kirk, David, Nick, Ian, Peter, Mark and Amish (in his last run out pre Aus)) all played mighty finely, the highlight of the evening was the presence of Jim (son of Mike) Gatting in the Catch 22 ranks. Hitting 6es at a rate rarely seen before, he could also bowl at a fair pace. However, after Gordon's cunning leggies had knocked him over a few times (Gordywould have had a hat-trick but for a no-ball due to one fielder being too close to the bat) the threat was assuaged and a Catch 22s total (whatever it may have been) was never going to be enough as Catch 22 lost, appropriately, 22 wickets.

All Elthorne partnerships kept ahead of the required rate and with only 4 wickets lost in all Elthorne passed the total with 2 overs to spare and hung on at the end. Catch 22 did achieve some consolation and pipped Elthorne into 4th place in the quiz to wreak some sort of revenge.
