2006-7 INDOOR EFFORTS

Elthorne CC vs Catch 22 - Lord's Indoor School
7/12/06: ECC won by 60 runs (2 runs per "run")
Details lost in the mists of time - but involved a comfortable victory for the men in white with yellow ducks

11/1/07: ECC won by 38 runs (1 run per "run")
Elthorne 179 (Peter & Mark 51, Fez & Ian 49, Rich & Gerry 17, Gordy & Nick 62)
Catch 22: 141

Elthorne were given a great start by Peter and Mark who put on 51 with just one dismissal and with a minimum of effort. Next up, Fez and Ian were out several times and had to work a little harder but still achieved similar success. Rich and Gerry entertained all with a mixture of runs, wickets and run outs, fortunately not quite in equal measure. Last up, Gordy and Nick restored Elthorne's fortunes with a well timed partnership marred only by a single run out. Playing for C-22, Mark Brodie bowled well and Vince's 'loopers' also enjoyed their moments of success.

For C-22 Don was immediately aggressive in reply as Elthorne early bowlers struggled to keep a straight line (ie they bowled a lot of wides - why not just go out and say it!) Peter pulled a great catch low down by the net to a firmly hit off drive. The harder Don seemed to hit it, the easier it seemed to stick in the hands of the Elthorne fielders! But at 30 off only 2 overs C-22 were off to a flying start. Peter, Gordy and Nick started to peg things back but C-22 opening partnership still made 50 - putting them ahead of the rate. Mark Brodie played some good shots including a straight six but Fez managed to take a couple of wickets but at the halfway stage C-22 were still marginally ahead of the run rate. Ash and Jimmy lived a little too dangerously and final pairing Keith and Vince needed 68 for victory. Excellent fielding and bowling kept them down to just 30 leaving Elthorne comfortably winners.

However, Elthorne were runners up in the Quiz - (no Blockers) as C-22 got revenge pipping us by a point.

22/2/07: ECC won by 69 runs
Catch 22: 146
Elthorne CC: 215 (G. Croneen & M. Astill 62, R. Poustie & I. Freeland 73, P. McLoughlin & N. Marsden, 80

Elthorne completed a hat trick of indoor victories with a 69 run win over Catch 22, in an 18 overs a side match. This was a six a side game with 2 Elthorne regulars (but latecomers) Gordy McLeod and Fez Sethi playing for Catch 22. Clearly not a case of running into form, then. Catch 22 made a bright start but without Vince and Nigel they struggled and tight bowling from Gerry and Ian restricted the run rate and wickets fell at regular intervals. Having run all the way from the station, Gordy was run out first ball and then stumped, both off Rich’s lob bowling.

Elthorne’s reply started slowly but Gerry and Mark still scored freely in their final 2 overs. Rich and Ian more than kept up the tempo with Rich hitting his first indoor six in the process, leaving the last pair of Nick and Peter just 12 to win off their 6 overs. Despite Gordy and Fez bowling well, Peter hit a sublime on drive for six and Elthorne strolled to a comfortable victory. A mix up over the food order in the pub meant an absence of nosh and the absence of Prof. David Whitelam meant the quiz team left with more than just empty stomachs.
